ST THERESA'S HOSPITAL @ 50 IT IS WORTH A GOLD TO CELEBRATE, SO OUR PRIDE
Located in Nandom district of the upper west region, the Catholic Diocese of Wa of the country Ghana, the St Theresa's hospital colourfully celebrated a jubilee worth of gold, 50 years providing healthcare to all manner of persons in a rural environs in Northern Ghana.
Started as a health centre by the early missionaries some several years ago, the hospital has grown from strength to strength delivering medical services to especially the three regions in the north including neighboring Burkina Faso.
In a colourfully Durbar to climax the year long celebration here in Nandom, the Medical superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Robert Amesiya addressing the gathering, traced history to the days of the hospital as a health centre. He said though the missionaries "white sisters" initial intention was to preached the word of God to the people, they were compiled to start a centre to treat or cure a prevailing disease Yorss that was an epidemic at the time.
"We are thankful to God for how far he has brought us, transforming our challenges into successes" he was proud of the teaming staff of the hospital announcing excitedly that " the hospital was peer reviewed among the other hospitals in the region and was adjudged the best hospital organised by the regional health directorate"
Dr. Amesiya, an orthopedic surgeon who have been admired for timely providing
Selfless services at the hospital, pointed to a 10 jubilee projects being undertaken by the hospital to include
1. Establishing an orthopedic ward
2. Building a two story staff accommo
3. Completing a hospital chapel
4. Completing the hospital fence wall
5. Befitting the hospital entrance
6. Expanding the hospital morgue
7. Establishing a VIP ward
8. Renovating an accident and emegecy ward
9. Completing the hospital administration
10. Acquiring a staff welfare bus.
He called on stakeholder support to enable the hospital realised these strategy needs.
Dr. Amesiya was proud that "from a humble beginning the hospital now has 4 resident Doctors including a specialist"
The upper west regional Director of health services, Dr. Wilfred Ofosu in a goodwill message, acclaimed the hospital as the only health facility in the region that provides orthopedic services. He again praised the hospital for maintaining a reliable blood bank, "infact the best and most reliable in the region" he said.
On his part, Deputy upper west regional minister observed the effort of the former MP for Nandom, Dr.. Benjamin Kuubour for collaborating with the district assembly to fund the establishment of the orthopedic ward for the hospital.
Chairman of the occasion Sir Nana Minta Afari (Dr. Gyader) encouraged the staff to lift up to their profession and provide selfless services to clients of the hospital. He recounted how health workers provided services in the past under a very challenging circumstances using himself as a long served medical master of the service.
The well attended program acknowledged dignitaries to include the Deputy Upper west regional minister, Dr. Benjamin Kuubour, former MP for Nandom and former minister health and Defence, the Bishop of Wa, Most Revered. Richard Baawobr, former DCE, Nandom Hon. Cuthbert kuupiel, Paramount chief of Nandom traditional area and his sub-chiefs and queen mothers, heads of regional security, medical superintendents and many others.
Certificates were presented to identified personalities who contributed in diverse ways to support the hospital.
The blessing of the statue of St Theresa at the entrance of the hospital was later done by most Rev. Richard Baawobr, Bishop of Wa.
