DISTRICT CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF NANDOM HANDS OVER AGRICULTURE EQUIPMENTS TO DISTRICT AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT UNIT

The issue of the Fall Army Worm (FAW) was reported in the country has not left out the communities in the Nandom District when it was first reported by farmers from Brutu and Danko on their farms on the 8th of June, 2017.

The District Chief Executive (DCE)Hon. Aasoglenang Thaddeus Arkum, expressed as worrying about this development as this army worms is destroying the farming activities in the District.

He was quick to add that District Director of Agriculture (DDA) and his staff with that of the NADMO Coordinator and staff met and planned to put in strategic measures to immediately control the wormy not to cause disaster. The DCE mention that government through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) has procured Chemicals and distributed to the districts for the control of the FAW in the whole country. The district also had her share of 13 boxes of the chemicals in stock for the fight to control the FAW.

He noted that issue was left with the spraying machines which Zoomlion assisted some few which is not adequate. The District Assembly quickly procured twenty-six (26) knapsack sprayers to be distributed to farmers control the worms. This he said was an occasion to present the items to the Agriculture Director and NADMO Coordinator to assist farmers.

He said the government has also reduced the price of fertilizer for farmers to enable them improve their yield in the programme “planting for Food and jobs” and charged them to take advantage of this opportunity and also follow the good farming practice by the Extension officers.

In a response by the District Director of Agriculture, he acknowledged the quick response by the DCE for the equipment and promised the Department would ensure that they are put to good use to fight Fall Army Worm. He appealed to other agencies and organisation to come to the aid of the farmers by supporting the Department with more of such items.
